As noted in a previous post, RMD postings have recently dwindled to a
level not seen since 1997. People are driven to congregate, so I doubt
that folks in general have stopped talking to each other.
I have noticed a few familiar names while cruising around various
dirtbike websites with forums. I am not active on any of the web-based
forums (dirtbike-related anyway, tractors and assault rifles
notwithstanding), so I don't know how their numbers have done over the
last couple of years, but I could guess that their numbers have grown.
Personally, I like the Usenet "everything in a big pile" format better
than the typical web-based forum with their hiearchy of sub-categories.
I don't have time to wade through 25 forum groups, headings, and
subcatagories, and find it very hard to keep track of threads and
constantly "misplace" threads (which are lost forever).
Usenet Newsgroups have the advantage of being able to be worked
offline, where internet connections are only required while downloading
messages, and uploading responses. IMHO, I find web-based forums
virtually unusable with a dial-up connection. In the past, as very few
actually had high-speed connections, most did not have the bandwidth
required for web-based forums.
In the past couple of years, connection technology has proliferated
such that most internet users now have DSL, cable, FiOS, or some other
high-bandwidth i'net connections. Is is possible that the Usenet
format has become obsolete?

I don't think so. Was that the infamous phone phreak? I was mostly a
lurker.
