Without upsetting the guys on both groups I should have cross posted in the
first place.

:I haven't posted here before but I have lurked for a while and everything
: seems much the same as aus.cars
: You have your noddy know it alls and like to bicker about minor points or
: order, I should fit in well.
:
: I am looking at buying a bike mid next year on a trip south and need
advise
: about a which one.
:
: I'm not a beginner rider in the strict sense of the term but it has been a
: long time since I have done any real regular riding and have never ridden
on
: the road much at all. 20 years ago I had an 88' DT175 which while not
: powerful was light, entertaining and reliable off-road. Only problem I
ever
: had with it was a clutch when the rear wheel got clogged with clay.
: Currently have a minibike which I only use for getting around at the show
: grounds each year where I am photographer (and clown). The amount of
: technology new bikes have is daunting.
:
: A little insight into the place here. There are no Bike shops at all,  You
: can buy a Yamaha ag bike at local the local Toyota dealer as they sell
: Yamaha but mainly for the outboards. They did get in 2 X 450 Yamaha bikes
: for "By any Means" and sold them afterward at super high prices. Any parts
: would need to be shipped in (1 month) or small parts can be airfreighted
but
: at inflated prices. The bike I buy would have to be reliable and all
repairs
: and servicing done by myself. A breakdown is almost unthinkable as the
bike
: would never be seen again and getting back to town would be difficult.
:
: Other guys that do track racing here have KTM 300's and one guy living in
: the same building as me had a bad run of luck before settling on that. He
: ordered an aprillia, it wouldn't run on the local crap unleaded fuel and
was
: problematic, I think he had that for 6 weeks or so. Then there was a Honda
: which he had for a couple of months, I think he sent it back under
warranty.
: Enter the KTM. and he seemed happy with it. I have another mate that seems
: happy with his KTM and he uses it for trail riding in the mountains. I'm
not
: sure how it would go on the highway.
:
: Looking on the net I have noticed the dry-400E seems to be the reliable
bike
: of choice, is it a deserved title? Or can a KTM handle some around town
and
: occasional highway use.
:
: The bike would have to run on nasty low octane unleaded (No premium here)
: Low maintenance, as I don't want to have to spend 3 weeks repairing it
after
: 1 weekend of fun.
: I' a big lad, 6'1" and a tad over 100kg so needs to be well sprung and
40yo
: Off-road capable (90% usage) and mountain climbing is a must.
:
: Ideas and flames welcome.

DR 650 is what has been thrown in the ring so far, and for the Septics I'm
in PNG which you will not know well but it is about as remote as the south
pole (Parts wise) but hotter all the time, coverd in mountains and bandits.

Yep, as well as pirates, the bandits are known as Rascals. Highway men on
the roads doing stickups.
Driving the 3 blocks to work can be an adventure.

A few years back I wanted to loose some weight so purchased a mountain bike.
95% temp all day and 99.9% humidity made that interesting.
Finally gave it up because wherever I rode people point and yell "whiteman".
Not once or twice but every place I rode. Gets annoying.

Beautiful countryside, nasty people around the towns and highways.
I can ride in places I am known, in small villages where I am welcome and
will have no problems, hopefully.
