Do you know, more or less, how much you'd spend on your hometown to do
the same job?

I was quoted $7500 for 4 porcelain-on-metal crowns and one onlay (bigger
than a crown, apparently) including $350 worth of probably spurious
cleaning/antibiotic treatments. The Algodones guy said I didn't need
that, a simple cleaning was sufficient, so I believe that Algodones
didn't pad their bill -- which would mean that the local place
under-diagnosed and overcharged. Since the locals wouldn't give me the
cleaning I had paid for unless I went for the upgrade, I should at least
go in and demand a copy of my xrays and photos -- digital is SO much
cooler than film.

All my fillings and crowns were replaced. I'd had some of them a LONG
time. I kind of miss seeing all that metal.

Nice. We used to have stuff like that here.

triple ouch! Teeth removal is less expensive, right? If not, I'd take
a 40kg rock, tie it to the painful tooth and drop the rock from a
bridge. Or to to mejico, of course.

I'll take a guess at some of many factors:
An Engulf and Devour economy has led to a consolidation of employer power to
the point that in many business sectors employers don't have to compete as
hard for labor so they skimp on benefits.
This E&D also has converted countless privately held companies, which may
have actually had a healthy paternal loyalty to its worker bees, into just
another apendage to a huge public company, which needs to perform first and
foremost for the stock market's all-day TV coverage.
Health care costs spiral higher and insurance likes to keep a good margin
above those, so insurance premiums are out of range for many individuals and
small businesses, even though it makes good sense to keep one's self and
employees healthy.
There are more and bigger causes too, I'm sure.

I do not know the solution to this problem.
I'm sure glad I had good insurance these past few years. Ugh.
