My son needs a new tire on his 07 KX250F. He races in mostly sand/dirt
tracks. If sugar sand was rated 100 and concrete was 0 than most of the
track where he races would be 80. (hope that makes sense) Any
recommendations on tires?

I've liked Michelin best, followed by Pirelli and Bridgestone. Never
cared much for Dunlop, except the K81's, but that was for asphalt...

I like sand, even if I rarely get to ride in it. It must be the
Florida boy in me. Here in Northern California, my fovorite rear tire
is a Dunlop 756. It's an intermediate terrain tire that I feel works
well in most of the conditions we see here. It wears pretty fast in
the begining allowing the knobs to round off, but after that it stays
very consistant until the knobs become to short for conditions. Summer
is so dry and with the slick hard pack, my winter 756s work just fine.

For sand, the tires should have tall knobs and a harder rubber
compound to force the knobs into the dirt, rather than deflect.
Pirrelli has a MX soft and mid-soft tires available that look to do
the job well. I have used a Michelin S12 in the desert and it worked
very well in the sand washes, but I don't care for how it feels on
hard terrain. It wanders/wiggles if your not on the gas hard as if
its telling you "find some soft dirt".

However, I would just take a look at what the fast guys at the track
are running. That not the indication of it being the best tire for
your son, but it proves someone is able to use the tire effectively in
the conditions you need it to work.

How about Pirelli MT44 on the rear? It's a semi-paddle design.

I have been watching as another poster suggested, for tire info at the
local track. I got in on a conversation with a couple of guys who were
trying different tires. The track is down by the CT River so it is
hard clay underneath some looser stuff, especially in the corners. I
would say the track we run on is probably an 80 too. They told me to
look for tires for hardpack, and the guy was running a Dunlop 739. He
said it was a pretty good configuration for our track, and that it was
a harder compound. Another guy had a Michelin I think it was, I did
notice the knobbies on most of the faster bikes had a similar pattern
for tread as the Dunlops I noted earlier.

NOTE: This is our first year riding, so any advice contradicting my
opinion here, should be take very seriously;)
