I know this is a dirt bike group, but the Alt.AVT isn't very busy and
who knows how long it will take to get an answer. Since many of you
also have ATV's, I felt this would be a good place to ask also.

Here's the question:

I am going to replace the starter on my 1999 Honda Recon 250. It
looks
like just 2 bolts and the cable is all that needs to be removed to
get
the starter out. But, since it slides into a gear in the tranny, will
that gear slip out of place to the point I can't get the starter back
in without removing the outer case? Has anybody did one of these?

Thanks,

Henry <~~~thinks it looks too easy

Usually, they are pretty easy. I don't think you'll get any nasty
surprises if you pull the old one off and look. It should have a
"Bendix" so that it only engages the engine when the starter is
spinning. So it should just nestle up next to the other stuff.

But that's just a guess. Maybe a parts diagram can be found online

Give a man a fiche and he wrenches for a day...

After I posted this I found these same links. I was thinking that the
starter shaft slid into one of those gears. But now I realize it
slides beside the gear and engages with the gear. I am going to remove
it tomorrow morn when it cools down. Too hot, 93, to do it today. It
should be pretty easy.

Thanks guys,

Hank

Easiest starter I ever removed. Took it apart and cleaned the
armature. Works great. All within less than 45 min.
