The teenager just completed a week in the mission field with our Youth and
with my work schedule these past 7 months, my "family time" account is deep
in the red. Time for a little payback. Mom got a fancy home cooked seafood
dinner followed by movie Friday night and we boyz planned a day at
Rockcrusher on Saturday. Travis wound up spending the night with a buddy
instead so now it's up to just me and the teen to tear up the trails.

After dinner & movie, the eldest received lessons and practical experience
in PM and pre-ride prep (ye olde once over [should have been twice
over...more on that later] oil change, filter cleaning & swap, tighten
spokes, grease & lube, etc.) He did a great job, and all *looked* good.
During the process the Blackberry beeped in with a couple of responses to my
ride posting on georgiaoffroad and after a looksee and phone call it looks
like some folks we had met at HP the day I bought the KDX.... Roger & Roger
JR (argrading & son) may join us. Wilson decides that after the ride on the
KDX that he wants to take his brother's TTR 125L instead of his *little*
XR100.

By 9am Saturday we are pulling on to McDonald calling Todd (Owner of
RockcrusherMX http://www.georgiaoffroad.com/facility.php?facilityid=93 to
make sure he'd be awake to take our money. From the looks of it, I woke the
boy up from the remnants of a hard night when I called <G>

1st thing I notice is that he's recently fixed the road into the property
and laid some new gravel down. (Thanks SORCS/TORCS racing series :-)

By the time we get unloaded and start gearing up another guy has pulled in
with a quad. Turned out to be a pretty beat up (by own self admission) '07
Raptor GYTR. Nice enough guy...but could easily be the poster boy for what
not to do with a bike regardless of number of wheels. He bought it brand new
15 months earlier and not only was it held together with bailing wire and
duct tape...he tells me that he lost the manual and couldn't figure out the
type and capacity for oil so he hadn't changed it or the air filter since
new :-0

Anyway, after I loaned him a compressor and some tools to effect enough
repairs to get through another day, we geared up and hit the MX track. Good
news is that it had just been prepped and was in excellent condition, soft
loamy turns, fast straights and well-formed jumps. Bad news is that I
finally was able to see first-hand what folks have meant by "do or die"
doubles and triples........ razor sharp peaks and steep drops from the
takeoff jump. No biggie, since we had the place to ourselves, there wasn't a
chance for anyone to be jumping over us while we rolled the jumps. The
tabletops, uphill jumps and downhill flyaways were big fun and we had a
blast on the track for about 7 or 8 laps.

After a quick snack and drink, our *tour guide* on the quad took us out for
a quick run on the trails. He had not stopped to talk to Todd so I told him
that he asked that we stay off any of the grassy areas so that it could
recover from the racing action a few weeks back. (I guess whipping shitties
and doing drag race starts in the middle of the pasture on a his quad was
exempt from these rules in his mind.....this was the beginning of a long day
of squidly activities by our newfound friend) I did call him out on the
action and he quit...for about 5 more minutes. We hit a few trails that
were still pretty beaten up from the race and had some nice challenging
ruts. The trail guide tired of bouncing around on the quad quickly and after
a couple of miles suggested that we go back to the track before "one of us
gets hurt".

By this time R&R had pulled up and as it turns out, we had the place to
ourselves all day! We racked up another 10 or so laps on the MX track by
which time big Roger (argrading) had the track dialed in and was clearing
everything except the triple and the big tabletop.

Next up was another trip to the trails. Never having been here before, we
were flying blind and on more than on occasion had to double back where a we
hit a large roadblock laid down to redirect race traffic. Overall though we
hit a great variety of terrain with rocky/rooty uphills, tight off-camber,
loamy bottoms and several creek crossings.

Back at home base, we make another banzai run at the MX Track. During a
break in the action, I notice that the rear hub on the TTR looks a little
odd. On further inspection it appears that the brake adjustment nut had been
moved to full on and had been in that position long enough to create a LOT
of heat and the hub was smokin! Somewhere during the process he also broke
a couple of spokes at the hub and whether it was the heat or spokes making
contact during jump landings or both, the outer lip of the hub where it
meets the brake plate looked like you had taken tile nippers and snapped
hunks off all the way around. Still don't know if one of the boys had done
the adjusting or if it happened somehow during the couple of getoffs he had
in the woods, but the TTR was done for the day. We live relatively close so
I took off to swap for the XR and when back, we warmed up on the track and
once again hit the trails.

Up on the back side of the property we headed up onto a narrow gravel road
and through a couple of long straights, we were able to wind them out in top
gear. (Don't know about R&R, but this is the first time either Wilson or I
had hit the top end on our bikes) BIG FUN! We wound around to the top of a
ridge and hit a paved road. This was evidently the planned expansion of a
new subdivision as there were real estate signs and a big set of stairs and
observation deck sitting on a trailer overlooking an awesome deep and wide
valley ringed by mountains. (This is where I remembered that I forgot my
camera

Several more miles of trails and switchbacks we passed a spot on what was
evidently part of the race course (arrows still up leading into the area)
and encounter this freakish barren, black loooong STEEP hillside.....we all
agreed that we didn't want any part of it in either direction. :-O

Head back to the track to find cattle everywhere and heading towards the now
open main gate. We do a little 2-smoke wrangling and move them into the
pasture below the track n play until it was time to head home around 3pm.
Great day and big fun, huge smiles.

Rockcrusher Admission for two $20
Bike Fuel $25
Using less than $15 worth of fuel for the hauler.....Priceless!

Great report and your place is a lot cheaper than the one I go to. Got
me psyched though, our track has been closed for days as the access
road has been washed out. It's open today, and I am itchin' to ride.

As to quads, it's a funny thing to me. Of course, my kid wants one,
and all of her friends with quads, want bikes;) I think you can do a
lot more on two wheels myself, but I am still a noob.

It's great to see the kids working on the bikes, it's good to see you
finally got some time out with your son.. Summer is half over, grrrrr,
starting to see that buzz in the stores gearing up for the
coming............ I can't say it..

Keith,
Thanks for the most excellent ride report. Let me know when you and
the boys can come down.

Our two day dual sport ride is scheduled for the Mount Magazine area
the weekend of Sept 19-21. It's on the AMA National Two Day Dual
Sport Series ride list.

Bring the boys down when nothing else is happening and I can show
them an especially good ride.

I may try to organize a Highland Park family ride before summer is
over. I'll do it if I can talk my daughter into bringing her family up
there to let Esteban ride with me. If so, I'll let you know.
In fact, let me know of any weekend time you might have free, and
i'll do my best to try to organize it at that time.

Jim

Will do, the new job is sapping everything away right now. I have passed the
turnoff to Brushy Mountain twice every week since 1/14/08 and have not the
opportunity to stop and ride once. :-( We may be able to pull it off the
week of fall break in October.

We *will* make this happen even if we have to bail on another event. What
month are you thinking? Aug 9th,16th or 23rd we can probably pull off a full
camping weekend.

I should have a good handle on the final schedule by Sunday. The Troop is
doing our annual planning this weekend, so the campout/trip schedule should
be fairly well set before we depart. Football will kick off the last weekend
in August (Wilson is marching in the HS band 29th and Travis is playing on
the 11YO team on the 30th) the first game is not one we can miss, but before
or after that we can work the schedule to our advantage.
