I am checking for the first time the valve clearance in my RMZ 250 to
adjust the shims. One of the valves is so tight, I can't even get the
smallest gage I have .015 into the space. So, it's basically held open,
how do I determine what shim to use? Is there a particular reason this
one valve should be so much tighter than the others? Should I look for
other problems?? Thanks in advance. Scotty

To determine the shim when I have a case like that, I swap shims
around and put on that tight valve the thinnest shim I have, then
measure. Ain't shim under bucket a joy? :)

If you suspect valve problems, if it was me, I'd check compression, do
a leak test (I have a poor man version, if you interested in knowing
how, ask) and ultimately have the valve re-seated by a specialized
company. btdt, way too many times for my liking <g>

found a nice ridge on the top of the cam bearing where it rides on the
journal. I have been told not to run it at all, I guess our season ends
early this season, no way I have the money to rebuild right now:(  She
is gonna' have to run the 100 for a while this summer, she is pretty
bummed...

That sucks.

If there's any good news, the return of the two-stroke is not far off.
This is exactly why.
Everybody loses when riding gets too costly. What's a ballpark number
to rebuild that motor?

When I get my 300 sorted, she can rip some laps on that if she wants.

Well, I was initially thinking about a grand to do the crank and piston,
but now that I need head work, or possibly a head, I dunno.

That would be cool, she is a real trooper, ready to go out and play on
the 100. It was interesting the other day watching her ride it, she
never let off;) I have been trying to talk her into looking at a 125 but
she is determined to stay on the 250 for the long haul...

Today, I took the cams and journal (caps) to Tim at X -Pro (engine
builders locally) Tim said since we are on a budget I should take a
piece of fine emery and clean up the cam and put it back together and
run it for now. Eventually we will have to replace the cams and he
doesn't know about the head yet, depending on what he finds on the
journals if he checks it out..

He did remind me however, that in the mean time we still have a bottom
end with over 100 hours on it and if a piece of crap got up to the head,
it stands to reason it got other places too. So, I am going to put it
together so she can ride it this week while Marissa (Markelon) is back
from racing on the west coast, and put it on blocks in a week or two,
back to the 100 for now...

Anyway, wish us luck! See you at the track!
