Here is what we/RMR do on the track. Weather we are on bike of foot,
when someone crashes the Mouse is to get her bike off the track if she
has gone by it. Or park in front of the disabled bike/rider, dismount
the bike, and safety flag the track. From there you can talk to the
rider and see if they will need assistance while flagging riders
around the crash.
I am usually not riding as the Mouse does not like me on her bikes;)
So I watch the kids course and help out when I can. I have held babies
as a frantic parent goes down the track after one kid, while the wife
is at the facilities, and many times I am the first one at a crash to
flag or check for injury, me being on foot in civies. I got tired a
few weeks back of running down the track only to have the kid jump up
and drive by me so we came up with some signals easily seen, basic
signals to pass info across the track. I don't see well so the Mouse
and I developed them with that in mind.
Here are the 4 signals we use on the track;
If a rider is down, but ok and getting ready to restart the bike, the
Mouse will put her hands straight up over her head and wait for me to
return the signal.
If a rider is down and hurt (needs parent or other attention) the
hands wave over the head and cross in front of the visor repeatedly.
Starting with the hands at 10 and 2 o'clock, you cross them in and out
in a very exaggerated manner , again, do this until the signal is
returned correctly or you see folks coming..
If a rider is down, and ok but the bike will not start or is damaged
and will need attention, the arms are extended straight out to the
sides at 9 and 3 o'clock and if it is her bike she will bring them to
her chest and out again, repeatedly.
All of these signals can be done with one hand for instance one day
when she was holding up a tiny kids little KTM with one hand while he
brushed off. She held up one arm and I told the kids parents he was
ok. He started his bike and took off. Anonter instance was the other
day when she dumped the new 200 and was walking it back from the
course to the parking lot. She has pushed it from the back of the
course. She shot me a signal the bike was down (flooded) and I took
the pit bike over, traded, got the 200 running and followed her back
to the lot. Saved her another 100 yards with a bike that weighs more
than twice as much as her.
Finally, the worst case was the other day when I saw a fast teenager
crash real hard, I may have been the only one who saw it. I started
trotting down the track and noticed he was not moving at all, not even
wincing in pain so I started running and doing the injured rider
signal over my head as I knew my daughter was off the track by the
parents area.. After a couple of waves I heard her yell to several of
the adults, "rider hurt", "rider hurt".. and in came the Calvary, the
signals worked perfectly. The rider walked away a few minutes later,
but I think they were going to have him checked out.
Anyway, those are the signals we use, comments or suggestions will
gladly be taken. I am not sure if you folks already have some of your
own.
