A group of aged technical types is challenging a group of young
technical types to a potato gun longest shot contest.
I am playing on the grown-up team. But I like the captain of the kids'
team, so I'm helping them when I can. This is one of those good-
natured competitions where everybody wins.
Both teams seem to be hitting the same problems; spark and fuel
mixture.
1) Aqua Net. Correct? Any other fuels worth considering?
2) Best ignition source? Both teams are using grill starters with poor
results.
3) Fuel to air mixture: any clues, tips or caveats? Some of their
shots went after being allowed to sit and age the charge to
perfection. The assumption is that time is leaning out a rich mixture.
4) what did I forget?
Rematch tomorrow, Monday, (Labor Day) at 11 am EST.
TIA,
Dean
one unofficial shot fired by Team Youth is reported to have cleared
all the moorings.
And to think they thought they'd be satisfied with an air pressure
powered gun. Actually, the air gun shoots pretty darned far and is as
reliable as a hammer.

Have you visited www.spudzooka.net? Good info for the air guns.
And don't give up on the air guns, either. I remember reading a report
from a bunch of engineer type that instrumented a variety of spud guns
and they found the pnuematic ones kept more pressure behind the spud
the entire length of the barrel (hence more acceleration for longer)
than any of the explosive propellant types, given that they have a
large enough air chamber to power the entire ,er, stroke.
I need to build one of those things.

I found lighter fluid (for Zippo's) to be quite effective as the
propellant...

I disagree, they are making all the air a better charge. And liquid fuel
doesnt ignite.

I know some use right guard...
I used starting fluid ether, and butane before.
It only takes a little bit.
Starting fluid kicks ass.
