Board puts brakes on motocross racing

Following Tuesday's Cleveland County Board of Commissioners meeting, a
Lake Houser Road resident will have to find another way to pay his
property taxes and entertain - one that doesn't involve squealing
tires near the First Broad River.
"We didn't plan to have it happen like it has happened," said the
resident, Kenneth Houser. "It was mainly to put the land to some use
to where we could pay the taxes on it. That's mainly why we started
it. We saw a need for family recreation."
Houser hoped for a text amendment to allow ATV and motocross racing in
a residential district with a conditional-use permit.
Commissioners unanimously denied his request.
"The petitioner had held racing events on that property previously and
were issued a notice of the zoning violation," said county Planning
Director Bill McCarter. "In order for them to legally hold those
events, it was necessary for him to come to the commissioners to get a
text amendment to allow that activity to occur."
But McCarter said the amendment wasn't specific to Houser's property,
which is southwest of Boiling Springs.
"This was going to embrace the whole county," said Commissioner Eddie
Holbrook. "We have to look at what's beneficial to county citizens as
a whole."

We raced there last year. It's hardly "residential". It's been
open as a (mainly) ATV place for a while. NCHSA raced there last
year for the first time. MidEast ran two rounds there this year.
