I found this guy, in a dirty garage, in a not-nice-part-of-town, who
happens to be one of the best motorcycle suspension technicians, if
not of the entire region, at least for the state I live.
Almost a year ago I bought on eBay a shock for my '94 RM125. The
seller sent me one for a '04.
For about USD20(*), guy sawed the shackle off and welded a fork from a
XR fork. Shock fitted great on the RM. :)
I'm happy and one day closer to get back on the dirt.

(*) He kept the old shock, he will cut it open to display the
internals for his customers, so he can explain his wizardry better...

That is GREAT! I love it when one finds that kind of mechanical expert.
Did you have him open up the new shock & rebuild it too?

I had him check the shock. I am on a tight budget with this project
(still trying to get a new yamaha tenere 250). I asked him to check
the shock (he is the certified Race Tech representation in the
region), as he have the equipment to check it. He said shock is good
but not great, however I could still clear a triple on it, if I had
the guts. He said that if I bring it him later he would make a special
discount on a complete rebuild. I plan on do that on the XR shock
first. Since when I put the cartridge emulator valves on the forks, I
feel the shock way too soft.
I'm very excited. And I bought the chromed part for the CG125 that
leaked, new (not oem) for only about USD10. Cheaper than the (oem)
seal. I'm swapping parts tonight. And if I have time, I will replace
the bearings on the RM linkage to make it ready to have the rear end
on place by saturday.
To do list:
-> swap cylinder and piston+rings
-> find 5w fork oil and fill and install the forks
-> replace steering bearings
-> replace linkage and swingarm bearings
-> replace wheel bearings
-> new spark plug
-> new oil
-> fill coolant
-> kick
-> ride

Lets hope the welds hold up! I dunno if this was a TIG weld on aluminum or
just plain steel - but it happens that the process of welding weekens the
part. I had that problem with an aluminum subframe where the tab had...
ummm...
"come off".

Good to hear!
Successful wrenching to you,
