John posted a short clip of his helmet cam footage from our ride in
the desert today.

This looks to be a frame capture from just above the steepest spot on
the ride down. We're headed all the way to the bottom:

One creek crossing, it was dry and had good traction when I got there,
but had iced up from my splash by the time John hit it. The rest is
the climb back out the canyon.

Steep?  Looks flat to me.

Don't you hate that?  Find the steepest place ever, take a picture of
it, and it looks like you're riding across a parking lot.  Happens all
the time on skis, which is even more irritating.

Sweet.  You 'West Siiiiiiide' guys have no idea how lucky you are to
have areas like that available to you.

More annoying -- my "disposable" camera (Canon A400) won't take movies
when it's cold.  Stills work fine, but it takes about half a second of
movie and then shuts the camera off.  My GOOD camera (Canon A720IS)
takes movies when it's cold, but ever since I fell while holding it in
my hand on a run and the lens cover wouldn't shut for a while I don't
use that one.  That movie was kind of neat:  reasonably steady shot of
the run, then GAAAKtumbletumbletumbletumbleoff.

If it was dry, where did the ice come from?  Don't tell me you peed on
the rocks...

I'd smash it.  Right on the ground.  No sense keeping a broken item
around, and even if it isn't broken, sometimes electronic equipment
just needs a good dose of discipline:

It's a yard sale camera.  I use it so I won't cry if I fall on it and
break it.  That's why I regard it as 'disposable'. I just need to keep
it in a place where it stays warm.

Cold is annoying.  Friend bought ski boots via ebay that fit fine in her
living room.  Very different at Snow Summit.  She has tiny elf feet and
couldn't get them into the boots.  Restroom hand-dryers did the trick,
but then it was a long walk back to the car to put her shoes away OR
spend a buck for a locker.

If it was me I'd put them in my old-fashioned gas oven -- the kind with
a pilot -- and then in some sort of insulated thingy when I left the
house.  She probably has a stove with electronic ignition, so I guess
she has to wrap them in an electric blanket.

I'm horrified.  There's a difference between discipline and destruction.
