JEFFERSON — European and American World and National Motocross
champions will be going head-to-head for the first time since the
Inter-Am and Trans-Am classic race format of yesteryear during Diamond
Don's seventh annual AHRMA Vintage National Motocross here April 3 -
5.
Over 600 entries are expected for the three-day race event which
includes cross-country and trials on Friday, vintage motocross and the
Vintage-AM Europe vs. USA race on Saturday and the post-vintage and
Women Pioneers of Motocross on Sunday.
This annual event is held on property located one mile east of
Jefferson off State Highway 49 East, adjacent to the Historic
Jefferson Railway.
Not since the last Inter-Am in the early 1970s have European and
American teams squared off in motocross competition the likes of which
will be seen at the Diamond Don event.
The U.S. team will consist of:
Danny LaPorte, team captain, the 1982 250cc World Champion.
Gary Jones, the 1972 Inter-Am Champion and multi-time 250 National
Champion.
Chuck Sun, the 1980 500cc National Champion and MX Des Nations
Champion.
Bill Silverthorne, an Inter-Am and Trans-Am veteran.
The European team will consist of:
Graham Noyce of England, team captain, the 1979 500cc World Champion.
Zdenek Velky of the Czech Republic, the 1974 Inter-Am Series Champion.
Herbert Schmitz of Germany, a multi-time German national champion.
Lars Larson of Sweden, and inter-Am and Trans-Am veteran.
The three-day event kicks off with Diamond Don's famous BBQ and
crawfish cookout on Friday and finishes with the Wind-Down Party and
fireworks display on Sunday evening.
Marty Tripes, now famous for his Marty's Gourmet Mushrooms, will be
honorary chef at the Friday BBQ and crawfish extravaganza.
Tripes won the Superbowl of Motocross at the Los Angeles Coliseum in
1972, just a few weeks after turning 16. He also won the first FIM
250cc motocross United States Grand Prix in Unadilla, Ga., in 1978.
In his career, Tripes won 11 national championships and was inducted
into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 2001.
Brad Lackey, another Motorcycle Hall of Famer, hasn't missed a Diamond
Don's event yet and is expected back this year. He will be racing a
replica of the RN82 500cc Suzuki that he rode to the world
championships in 1982.
When not on the track, Lackey's bike will be on display.
Also expected for the weekend is nine-time national champion Mercedez
Gonzalez, and early motocross icon, along with Sue Fish and U.S.
Women's Motocross Team members Tami Rice and Bonnie Warch, all
participating in Sunday's Women Pioneers of Motocross events.
Gate fees for the event are $15 for one day; $25 for two days; and $35
for all three days. Children 10 years of age and younger are admitted
free. Dry RV and tent camping is included in the gate fee. Showers and
water are available at the track. RV pump-out services for accessible
RVs are $25.
Actually the three day event starts off with the Vintage Cross Country
and Trials events on Friday morning. (It's not just Vintage MX.)
I am planning on attending (and competing in the CC event). What
would be the perks of photos and a report?
