What kind of Bike for my Son?

 I am trying to figure out what kind of bike to buy for my son. He is 13

years old, average weight and height and very athletic. I dont want to
go for a motorcross because he is a beginning rider, but an
offroad/trail bike would be a good start for him. I have been riding
street bikes for nearly 20 years but I have no idea about offroad
bikes. What kind of bike does anyone recommend, cc's, 2 stroke or 4,
Etc. I also want to find out about a bike for myself so we can ride
together. I am about 5'11 220LB. Any advice would be helpful.

the race tracks.
  My neighbor thought I would get into flattracking.  He was
GrandNational #5 in 1956.  Nope, looked boring to me, and even with the
possibility of sponsorship from his ex sponsor, I didn't care.
  I didn't get along with roadracing, so bought a dual purpose bike to
learn to MX.  Couple months later, bought CZ 250 and started racing MX.
  You can't always KNOW where you end up until you go on the journey.

the Crusty Demons series along with Wrath Child, Disturbing
the peace, Full Power Trip, Fist full of Throttle, Steel
Roots, Seth the Hard Way, and Organ Donors. After your son
watches those videos he may have a really good idea of how
he wants to learn to ride, you can select a bike from there.
