Hi All,
I am trying to do a little background in preparation for a upcoming
feature about tires and need some help!!
Can you state what tire you run and the pros/cons?
Please include bike and terrain info?
THANK YOU
For instance; I run a Dunlop Geomax MX51 on my 2001 YZ125.
Excellent traction in all terrains tried and from mud to clay to
bluegroove.
Pros: Consistent wear on both sides,
Was hard as hell to mount for some reason..
Terrain was NC red clay MX tracks, NC woods with no rocks, SC clay and
hardpack includign sand track, GA clay and woods, with roots and
slippery mud/clay.
Loved it everywhere and seems to wear better than the old 756 or 756RR
Paid $129 for the pair. I'm using a "250 tire" width in the rear for
more footprint in the woods - 110/90/19 and 80/100/21 in front...

2001 Gas Gas xc300
current setup is my favorite so far.
Front:
Michelin S12xc 90/90 - 21
Rear:
Michelin S12xc 140/80 - 18
I put a fairly good full season of screwing around at the practice
track, plus the Stimilon race, and these "soft" tires have worn like
iron. The front tire looks almost fresh, and the rear is only now
beginning to lose the leading edge of its massive knobs. Thise 140-80
- 18 is huge, as in, a dollar bill barely spans the width of the knob
pattern, And as Big Daddy Jim Cook pointed out, this tire is somewhat
unique in that the knob size increses with the tire width. Evidently,
some other designs just increase the spacing between the knobs, or
something.
Jim warned me that I might not be steering with the gas as easily with
this oversized meat (stock is a 120/90 - 18), but I found it added
just the right amount of balance to the mighty 300 for my intermediate
riding skills. Now I can hit it harder out of the corners and it will
step out predictably rather than swapping ends in a flash. The front
sticks great, and the whole package inspires predictability and
confidence. I'm sure that extra size also explains some of the reduced
wear in the rear. There's a 130 in the middle I should try some time,
maybe. I wanted the monster 140 for Southwick's deep sand.
Hopefully I'll get enough practice before the Big Rematch to be
wanting a fresh set.

I run various knobbies on the front... like Maxxis IT pretty well.
Also like Maxxis IT rear pretty well. I really like a trials tire on
the rear for most conditions. What I like most about it is that it
lasts forever. It also works very well in most conditions. It is only
fair in some kinds of sticky mud. Our riding is varied terrain...
rocks, roots, creek sand, dry, hard and slick, soupy, and sticky clay.
