It is said, elsewhere on the interweb, that a Direct Injection 2stroke
engine would not require an expansion chamber. Others speculate that
an expansion chamber would still offer improved performance.
Pipe in with your opinion.

Nice pun. "Pipe in..."
Somewhere a 2-stroke engineer is ROFL at how a gullible journalist took
his bait and ran with it. A 2-stroke needs a tuned expansion chamber to
breathe. It gets some charge from pumping action from the crankcase but
needs some assist on the exit side as well. The method of inserting fuel
into the air doesn't change this.
Notice the latest rage in 4-stroke exhausts? Expansion chambers. FMF
calls it a "Power Bomb." Others are grafting similar chambers to
headers, but not as pretty due to FMF's patent.
