I saw some neat gloves in the bargain bin at a ski shop at the ski
area I frequent this past weekend. They were snowboard pipe gloves -
made for riding a half-pipe. They were some kind of neoprene material
with rubber-infused grippy palms - thought they'd make excellent
winter riding gloves for those inclined. Do an image search for
"snowboard pipe glove" or "snowboard park glove" for examples.

I got a set of "warm weather snowmobiling/cold weather wrenching" gloves
from this outfit six to eight years ago.

The gloves I bought are truely waterproof and quite warm.

I have a much older, plainer version of something like this:

Basically just an uninsulated shell, I wear thin fleece gloves
underneath. These and grip heaters and I'm good down to the mid 20's.

I used to wear the bulky but warm ski type gloves when it got really
cold out. They definitely keep your hands warm but are really too
bulky for serious riding. I usually wear standard riding gloves or
mechanics type gloves in cold weather and my hands do get a bit cold
sometimes. I pickup a pair of riding gloves last year from the Yamaha
shop that are lightly insulated and not too bulky and they work okay.
Of course if you drop your bike and break through the ice with your
hand and it's 17 degrees, you are going to have a cold hand for
several minutes... don't ask me how I know. :) A warm radiator or pipe
is your best friend when that happens. :)
