I have been working on my Honda XL600 getting it ready for some dual
sporting and exploring out here in Ocotillo Wells, CA. The throttle
has a two cable system which I have never experienced before on any of
my machines. I am replacing my return cable which is a major pain in
the ass but I figure it is necessary because it came on the bike. I
tore the carbs apart before I left for Oregon last spring and now only
need to get spark to the engine and hear some poping sounds. Clymer
says to test the CDI by replacing it with a known good one because
there is no test for it otherwise. If I need a new one it is $130
pluss shipping online. Ant suggestions out there? Thanks, OF

All current four strokes with carbs have a push/pull throttle cable.
Believe it's required by law.

4s flat slides almost always have that. And FI powered systems, too. Seems
like the force of the return spring doesn't do the job in every case.
After my little "mishap" with CR250R, big (involuntary) double and
cracking my right foot into 1000 pieces, I can understand why two cables
are no bad idea.

Venhill.co.uk has decent sets. Caroline in the sales office was very
helpful with replacing my KTM throttle grips and equipping the YZ426 with
new cables.

Sorry. No idea in testing a CDI without swapping it with a "known good"
one. An oscilloscope might help tracking down misfires. Test everything
around the CDI (spark plug, ignition coil, alternator, cables, etc.) and if
that's all fine, bite the bullet.

Volker

I have pictures of the various waveforms (Fluke 97 50 mhz) from the stator
and the ignition module around here somewhere, but my XL600R was acting up
because the single, silly ground for the ignition system was a push on
spade lug under or near the coil was wobbly.

I took the pictures with the spark plug removed.
