I am trying to upgrade rear brake on my bike. I got a great deal out
of ebay on a complete XR400 rear brake system and now of course I need
the hub. I let a complete XR400 wheel slip out of my hands on ebay for
just $75... Amazingly, the '98 XR400 part seems much newer and in
better shape than most parts that are within the same proximity from
ground on my '02... Actually, besides a lot of dust, the part I got is
essentially brand new...

Well, today I saw this: http://tinyurl.com/2x6j29

Does anyone know if the hub width of a XR650 and a XR400 are much
different? Better yet, does anyone know the width of the XR650 hub and
the length of the axle? Other question, if anyone knows, is if the
brake disk is the same, seems that the rear brake system on three
bikes are equal: XR650L, XR400 and XR250.

An online parts catalogue shows that XR650L, XR650R, XR400 and XR250
have all different part numbers, but I really don't care about that,
as I am adapting anyway... I know for sure that the XR400 hub fits
with very few modifications needed as I'd only need to find someone to
fabricate the wheel spacers...

Can't stand drum brake anymore, but maybe I should wait until a XR400
hub shows up...

I don't know about the 650 vs. 400 hub question, although it wouldn't
surprise me if they were the same.  I think the 250 and 400 are the
same.  I do know that Honda uses the same rear brake pads on almost
all of their bikes, bigger XRs and CRs from 85cc up, so the brake
systems are likely identical.

hmm, so, CR85+ have the same rear brake system... Maybe a CR125 hub
would be easier to come than a XR400 rear hub... That's valuable info,
thanks!

I could go ahead and get a "NX400 Falcon" hub, it is like a hundred
american money, new from the dealer, but this hub has rubber cushions
that the XR doesn't, I don't need rubber cushions to break in the
middle of a trail...The Falcon has 17" wheels, but the spokes of my
bike (has a 18" wheel) fits perfectly, the right side goes left and
the left goes right, the spokes on the XR400 are completely different,
straight end on the XR400 and bent on my bike and on the Falcon, this
is another reason to get a XR hub, it is stronger...

The difference between the Falcon brake system and XR400 brake system
is only the part that holds it against the swingarm, the Falcon has a
closed hole where the axle go through, the XR has this part open in
the bottom... Besides, they have the same master cylinder, hose,
caliper, reservoir, pads... And seems that I can only get stolen
Falcon parts... Or at least I can't be sure it is a honest salvaged
bike, and I don't want to give more motivation to thieves, I'd rather
pay shipping...

Tiago. I am not trying to hi-jack your thread, but, I am interested in
 much the same subject.
I am trying to figure out if the, (drum brake model), rear wheel is
the
same on my 85 XL350R as the wheels on the XL/XR 250, XL/XR500 and
XL/XR600. I believe they are, but, can't find online part #s to
confirm this.
I am planning on having a set of 17" motard wheels strung up for the
350R.
E-Bay provided me a good front wheel and now I need to find a
suitable rear.
 Cheers, SloCalSpode

Hi Jeff!

Well, I know for sure that XL350R and XL250R shares the rear wheel, as
well as XR200 and XL125... The front on brazilian model XL250 had
drum, while 350R had disk. The front on these models are NOT
interchangeable, you have to change the forks to fit a disk front on
the 250R, but the rear is exactly the same. There is a XR500 rear
wheel (looks exactly like the one from a XR250, but I am not sure,
these were not sold here) for only $30, buy-it-now, on ebay right
now... :-)

While searching this subject of wheel change (as well other
frankenstein engineerings), I found that honda sometimes modifies
little things on bikes and gives different part numbers. I know for
sure that the "NX400 Falcon" (google it, it is an aberration) shares
the same engine of a XR400 except for cam, carburetor, primary drive
gear and crankshaft, still, many part numbers are different, I don't
know why, because the parts are absolutely identical... The part
number for the rear hub on XR250R and XR400 are different by only one
digit and I am almost certain they are equal...
