Dear All,
i resqued a XT550 from the trashcontainer some 4 years ago.
Two years later i bought valves, camchain, chainguides and some
gaskets, inserted them that same day.
Bike did not fire.
Today i took the bike to my younger brother for storage because wifey
wanted some space in the backyard.
Bro asked me what i repaired on the bike sofar, and while showing him
we redid/checked my repairs.
I ran off to get sparkplug and fuelline, meanwhile bro couldnt
controll himself, he just had to fiddle with the valvetiming.
Carb leaked like there was no floatbowl, so we cleaned and checked
that again.
Guess what: after few kicks the bike fired up like it hasnt been
dormant for 4 years!!!!
It took just 4 hours of wrenching to compensate for 4 years of
collecting dust under a tarp.
We found a "good enough for testing" finaldrivechain, rivveted that
under the bike and tried to make sense out of the clutch.
Took some doing to get the clutch to engage and release as it should,
but we mannaged to make it simulate full functionallity.
Next the bike of course did not fire anymore ;(
Tomorrow we are gone fiddle with carbs (i found a spare from a xt600
in my bikeshed) to maybe get it ready for a testdrive.
Oh, There is lotsa things to do...saddle missing, rear brake missing,
tank mounted with ducttape, fenders missing, handlebar is a bit bend,
but progress has been made ;)
Grtz, PymerOne.

FIE! Where did the idea come from that motorcycles have to be shiny and
unscratched and perfect? POSERS!

Dear Bev,
thanks for helping me publish the idea that a bike should wear the
signs of being used with pleasure and expertise ;)
Kidsbike is nearperfect because it was bought new, and used very
carefully.
My xt550 now starts almost every time we try, though the carb still
leaks now and then.
I am gone find rearbrake and seat and footpegs and airfilter with
housing now, so we can do some more testing later.
Tankmounts seem to have been moved 2 inch lower, which makes it
impossible to mount the tank as it should.
Frame is broken under the engine between the footpegs, when rewelding
the tankmounts we will cure that.
Seat needs a new cover, spokes need sanding and paint...maybe later
when the engine is mechanically OK.
Handlebar is somewhat straightened, need to find left grip for it.
Work in progress...the story of fun and exitement ;)
