P1,
From your description:
Engine is running lean; probably because the idle circuits are still
clogged with some old fuel leavings. This causes the backfiring on
deceleration and hot running at idle.
At the same time, the faulty float valve is making the starting
circuits too rich for easy hot starting. When the engine is running,
it is consuming more fuel than the float valve is allowing to bypass
(which is what is leaking out the overflow when the engine is not
running.) If this is one of those Mikuni float valves which are
sealed in place by tension on the outside of an o-ring (installed on
the outside of the float valve), then it may just need a new sealing
o-ring to work properly.
I figure that your auto-decompression circuit needs adjusting (where
the cable connects to it) for it to work correctly while kickstarting.
(I would still check the valves and make sure that they are not too
tight; caused by wear on the valves.)
Are the clutch drive plates aluminum? If so, that is probably where
the aluminum debris in the oil is coming from. Get a new set of metal
drive plates and see how it works. Your oil will stay much cleaner,
and your clutch will stay in specification limits much longer.
In short, I think that you are almost there. Way to Go!!!!
Good Riding, and Thanks for the update.
Jim
