Hey Guys--

Betsey delurking again to ask some hopefully not so stupid
questions....

here's the scenario--this past january, we bought Nate a used yamaha
pw 50....nate turned five in january <grin>. he's doing a great job
with it, tearing up the backyard, and fred and the kids joined
Chatsworth off road park. The kid loves it....and is really pretty
capable on that bike.

the bike is uhm, more for back yard riding that really taking the
course at Chatsworth....so, we are thinking that a little bit bigger
bike will help Nate.

so far our choice had been the Yamaha tt-r 50. Then while looking at
the different bikes, came across the suzuki dr-z70. it's less than an
inch taller, and has both electric and kick start. We aren't
interested in motocross (at least not for awhile).

anyone out there familiar with both? thoughts? nate is going to be 6
in january, pretty tall and athletic for his age, weighs in at about
55-60 lbs.

I keep saying i'd like something he can grow into, but is this wishful
thinking on my part? is it, as i mentioned to my husband, just
something i need to accept, that every year-two years, we'll be buying
a bit bigger bike?

so edumicate me and let be smart in front of the hubby...(as well as
make good decisions regarding the bike...)

Don't get something so big that it won't be safe for him. My kids moved
from a PW50 to PW80 to KDX80 to XR200.

Why are you buying him bikes? Can't he get a job in a gament factory
somewhere to help support his riding? :-)

Whatever you get him this is one lucky kid -- when I was 6 I had
about as much chance of getting a dirt bike as a Lear jet.
Mebbe you better wait till he's at least 8 years old before
you enter him in the Baja 1000...

Buy the bike that fits him best and will challenge his abilities. I
mean one that may need to be shifted but no clutch. It is the next
step in the process. After that, get him one that shifts and has a
hand clutch.

If your son grows like other kids, expect to upgrade every year or if
he is really a fast learner, every 6 months. :-)

If he doesn't fit on the bike properly, or he has trouble learning to
shift, clutch and etc., he won't enjoy it. At his age, it is all about
fun. Keep the 100 Honda, it won't be as long as you think until he can
inherit it.
