Pretty much. I learned it when I took that Supercamp
near you. Chris Carr was the guest instructor and I
asked him if his driving the camp's Explorer back and
forth over the track during classroom - non riding - time
really made a big difference. He intimated that it was
the only reason we were able to ride there that day as
there was not enough water in the track when they
got there, they watered heavily, and now he was
wheel packing to make it OK to ride.
I've learned a little about it here. I can't use the
pickup or cars because unlike Carr inside Mototown,
I can't really reach all the track going back/forth because
of blueberries, asparagus, and blackberry bushes, and
the corners are too tight for the turning radius of
the cars (to go around). My smaller 20 horse John
Deere lawn mower works perfectly though. I can't use my
bigger tractor (Bolens HT-20, biggest "lawn" tractor
you've ever seen, that I plow the drive with in the
winter) unless I take the chains off which is a pain
but that's what it takes. The chains don't pack as much
as shred.
Today was the wettest I've tried it and it worked really
well. The corners where slick at first but we did 15-20 laps
each way then went out with the tractors again. Second
time after another 10 minutes of packing was EXCELLENT.
Foot down, back end out a tiny little bit, power on. First time
the biggest problem was front end washout which was
good for me as it's a consequence of rolling my shoulders
too far forward. I started keeping them rolled back and
the problem went away. You can teach an old dog new
tricks as long as he's not tired and is concentrating on
the task at hand (keeping that slumped, shoulders back
position).
Come and try it Father's Day. We've got spare bikes and this
will be the first time we do a short track. Maybe only time as
if there are any passes, they will have to be aggressive ones.
I guess that's an announcement. Sturd Ranch and Raceway,
Father's Day, practice 1, amateur race about 3, Pros at 4.
We've got sleeping space, first come first served.
Go fast. Take chances.
