I went out to check my freeze protection with the old floating balls
in an eyedropper gizmo. Two floaters won't get me safely through the
winter. But that's easy to fix.
Of more worry though, I have detected a small amount of sticky black
greasy residue under the cap. This indicates a problem methinx. Please
advise.

Dean,
I am almost positive that you have a bad inner head gasket o-ring
seal. This will allow exhaust/compression gas into your coolant.
An extra check you can do is to take the cap off the radiator, and
start the bike. If you see pulses in the water that correspond to the
engine idling (as opposed to a smooth flow from the water pump), you
definitely have a bad "head gasket" seal. If you don't see the pulses,
it only means that the sealing o-ring isn't leaking very badly, yet.
However, the presence of spooge in your coolant is enough of a sign,
all by itself.
