my canon 20 + year old 35mm camera is worn out..
i liked the rugged qualities so I could
take it hiking, motorcycling , skin diving... ect.

does any photo bug types have any opinions
on a modern harsh environment camera.

I asked the question over at a boating group I attend, here are a
couple of the responses:

"Pentex Optio WP's. from a pretty savy guy in Cal.."

And this from another guy who I know does amateur photography:

"If he wants a DSLR he should buy a Nikon or Canon Camera, and then
buy
[link]" techy geek kind of guy.. sorry Reggie;) if you are reading
this group;O

Here is a link to the thread, It will probably grow over the next day
or so:

Pentax Optio W30 could be for you:
http://www.pentaximaging.com/products/product_details/digital_camera--Optio_W30/reqID--9587364/subsection--null

Image quality, handling and menu-system is not outstanding, but it does its
job well and isn't too expensive. The rather large TFT on the back panel is
difficult to read in direct sunlight (no viewfinder), but that shouldn't be
too much of an issue.

HTH,
Volker

perfect, except the 10 feet water thing. i normally don't go past 30 feet
free diving since the light & colors fade below those depths, the
interesting stuff for me is between 10-20 feet typically <snorkeling wise>
as for the hiking, biking, a quicker ramp up time & minimal shutter delay is
helpful when taking action shots of Hellsickle hugging deer.
