I've been following the latest DMG debacle. Perhaps somebody could
answer me a small question I have.
Is it possible to buy an 1125R out of the showroom, and then buy
homologated, legal tuning parts, fit them and arrive at the same machine
as an 1125RR?
If it is, then there's no problem. Buell are simply saving people the
trouble of assembling a pile of race bike parts by selling them as a
package.
If it isn't, then AMA/DMG/Buell are taking the piss and ignoring the
rule book.

Yes. If you have a competition license. I don't see why anyone
couldn't sell a 'race ready' version of their bike, as long as it fit
the rules. Big hubub over nothing if you ask me.

No, if you follow the rule book. As an example, the RR web page
lists larger airbox and intake manifold, prohibited in 2.12 i and iii
of
the rule book. Also, the forks are different, prohibited in 2.7a.
I haven't looked real extensively but the answer is, no, you
can't build one yourself without busting the rule book.
Are the changes of any consequence? Who knows?
Who cares? I might be convinced to watch by the
fact that the anti-christ is no longer winning but doubt
it.

Going by what John Ulrich wrote, AMA Pro seem to have told Eric Buell he'd
have to
make a race-only homologation special if he wanted to get the parts he wanted on
the
bike:

A couple of months ago Erik Buell told me that he wanted to homologate a bunch
of
racing parts for the 1125R and start racing it seriously in the AMA American
Superbike class. The problem, he told me, was that AMA Pro officials told him
that
they would only approve the parts if Buell put them on a bike and sold it as a
complete, ready to go motorcycle, in essence a racing-only model or version of
the
1125R.
I didnšt think much about it, and didnšt consult the rulebook at the time. But
as it
turns out now, there is no reasonable interpretation of the rulebook that allows
for
homologation of a racing-only model or version of a motorcycle for
production-based
AMA Pro competition. Which means that AMA Pro officials either didnšt read their
own
rulebook before deciding to homologate the Buell 1125RR, or chose to ignore it.
The
Buell in question made its debut at Mid-Ohio this weekend, the paddock in an
uproar
and Erik Buell being vilified for doing something AMA officials told him to do,
which
is opposite of what he wanted to do in the first place.

Because the parts would have been outside the rule book?
