Well quite, but the british media can't resist bigging up the local
hero. In the run up to this weekend here it was all about how
Toseland had a chance to get a podium, something I think was pretty
remote.

Sure, that was the last time a brit genuinely showed well, imo. I
almost mentioned Fogarty elsewhere in the sub-thread about Spies good
showing this weekend, and he'd still had more exposure to the tracks
than Spies.

A report in the mainstream press today (yes, our mainstream newspapers
cover motorcycle racing in the sports section) says he lost traction
when he *shut* the throttle. But I'm not sure how far to believe
that.

Hence my question about who was around him at the time and what they
were doing. It was a blue bike directly in front and a green bike to the
side. But how close were they? Anyway like Fogarty's final race, if
you're stuck in the back of the pack in the early laps, shit happens.
Toseland's weekend went wrong when it rained and then somewhere around
2/3 of the way though qualifying. The actual race was like the final
straw. I thought he might get another 6th but I didn't think a podium
was ever on.

The whole BBC thing felt like a program director's bad idea. I don't
think motorcycle fans want a lot of human interest stories in the build
up, but mainstream TV can't bring itself to just show the support races
or fill in with all the technical gossip. They always seem to feel they
have a duty to "explain" to outsiders. Which is why it will be very very
sad if Eurosport lose their contract. 2 long term enthusiasts, a
technical team owner and a crazy ex-almost world champion makes a very
good team and way better than Perry, Parrish, and the wotsisnames.

Funny to hear John McGuiness in the commentary box during the 250 on
Eurosport. And a reminder that he's done the British GP many times on
all sorts of different machinery. Julian Ryder managed to get in the
fact that John had won the Daytona 250gp race (twice?) as well.

Oh sure - I'm glad the BBC show all the MotoGP races, but I much
prefer the coverage that Eurosport do - as you say, the commentary
team are talking to fans, not just people who happened to tune in.

I've not watched the 250 race yet. McGuiness is a star, and he has
something I really rate in a rider, and that's a sense of history (see
new post...) - after setting the 130mph lap racord at the TT last
year, he said how happy he was that it was 50 years to the day since
Bob McIntyre did the first 100mph lap. How many young riders would
know that? I like racers who are fans too.

First I've heard of that. I'll be very pissed off if that happens.

And don't forget that Fogarty filled in for Chili in '90 after Frankie
got hurt at Spa, so he had previous time on a 500. And of course he
was used to racing on Michelins.
