We can't directly compare the pace of this year's races, but since
WSBK ran the short course we can compare this year's WSBK with the
last two years of AMA. Qualifying times may not be useful since WSBK
uses qualifiers and the AMA doesn't. However, I'm curious how the
race lap times compare. Anyone have that information? Anyone? Mark?
Beuler? Mark?

If you compare qualifier times, the WSB bikes were running almost a
second faster than AMA SB qualifying last year.

But race lap times, Spies ran a 1:49.86 on Sat and 49.83 on Sun last
year. I don't know the exact times, but I think Checa got in to the high
1:50's, may mid 50's both days this year.

The other AMA guys were running low to mid 50's last year, both days.

It should also be noted that last year was a lot hotter than this year,
so that may have had an effect as well. I think the AMA bikes would have
been a bit faster if it were as cool last year as it was this year, but
that's just a guess.

You're right about Checa's 1st race best lap being over 1:50, but his
2nd race best was a 49.7, which is a track record. But only by a few
hundredths - Zemke did a 49.78 in the first SB race two years ago. In
similar temperatures, but the track might have been more dusty then,
as there was no grass and the whole site looked like a construction
zone.

Anyway, that means Checa on the Ten Kate Honda essentially tied a two-
year-old record set by Zemke on the previous version of the CBR built
by American Honda and running on two-year-old Dunlops, both riders in
their first round at the track. Take from that what you will...

Great info guys. You mentioned Dunlop but can you tell us anything about the
WSBK tire? I mean, did the riders say this years is better or worse, softer
or harder?
