You've got to play the politics at HRC, but he really doesn't have
anything to lose at this point, so it is good to see.

So somehow you know this is "the best stuff", even though HRC doesn't
want to run it with anyone on the race team yet? From what Nick has
said, even going back to testing in the winter, is that this motor works
better with the new chassis for him, which I don't think is something
that Pedrosa has said. So it's a better feel he's looking for right now
and not more or better power, it seems.
5th quick and 0.6 faster than Pedrosa in the first session at Donington...

Right now that would seem to be mostly Melandri's seat, and you have to
think the sooner that gets evacuated the better for all involved.
Kawasaki and maybe Suzuki are the others factory seats, but that would
mean either Kawi is willing to run two Americans (and pay for both of
them, which is the bigger issue) or Suzuki would have to be willing to
give Spies a slap in the face; anything on a lease team is just a waste
of time.

Hayden at HRC in the Pedrosa "compact bike/rider" era has been a
mismatch from the beginning, and everyone knows it - the Soup pole on
Nick ran 61% get out, they never wanted you, 21% Ducati is the place you
ought to be, and only 6% stay the course.
Btw, Spies did okay in his first session, only 0.3 off Guintoli and less
than a second off Melandri. By the end of his first 10-lap run he was
down to a 33.1, while Lorenzo was at 32.7 after his 8-lapper, and
Vermeulen was at 31.2 after 7. Seemed to pick it up quickly.
