Frankly, I'm amazed - for Honda to break it's long, long association
with Michelin, in mid-season is quite incredible.

Mick Doohan: "Pedrosa is listening to the wrong people."
More fall out from Rossi's move to Bridgestone? Now he's got inside
Pedrobot/Puig's head?

Yamaha DID set an industry precedent.
From the results this week, though, it looked like Michelin was just
going through a rough spot. Neither marque seemed to confer a
particular advantage during this race.
IRRC, the top ten included five of each, no?
I'm guessing the results would have been virtually the same if all the
teams had switched tire brands.

Well, I think all the Mich runners have a right to be unhappy after
Laguna and Brno. At Laguna Michelin committed an unbelievable
logistical mistake by not taking the right tyres, and at Brno they
were way off the pace. But there's some truth in what you say - Rossi
rolled the dice last winter, and seems to have got lucky again - he's
ended up on tyres that he can beat everyone else on, and can take the
racing to Stoner.

The tire rules say the teams acan only pick a certain number of tires for the
weekend, but they don't say that the tire companies are limited in how many
different
kinds of tires they bring to an event. So, yes, Michelin screwed up very badly
by
only bringing tires that would work when it's crazy hot at Laguna Seca, instead
of a
bunch of those and a bunch of tires that'd work when it's cooler, like it has
been at
other editions of the race. Monumentally dumb move by them.

Well, a lot of racing is about seeing that other people are going faster than
you
think you should be and desiring what they have. In this case, what the other
riders
who are going faster have is seemingly obvious: tires.
Something to think about: if the riders got together last event and said they
liked the idea of having a single tire marque, maybe Pedrosa is wangling for the
change in anticipation of that. i.e. he'll get a head start on getting used to
what
he thinks will be the only tire in the game.
