I just watched the first WSB race from Miller yesterday evening.
Is it me, or is the picture quality not what we're used to from
elsewhere?
I couldn't work out if it was just because the cameras were further
from the track, or the camera operators were perhaps not as good at
zooming in on the action, or whether there was some underlying
technical reason due to different broadcast standards used in the US
(NTSC vs PAL?).

All of the above. One comment was that it was shot in SD and then
NTSC>PAL converted. It's always a bit of a shock to go from MotoGP to
BSB to WSB in the USA.

I always figured it was down to this. Same happens when we get the feeds
from Laguna Seca as well. Colours are wishy washy and picture quality is
average (and I'm watching on a normal old CRT).
Which in turn makes me wonder in the North Americans suffer crappy
pictures for the rest of the season, but moving to HD *should* help that
out.

I agree. Saw an edited telecast yesterday in Australia. Picture
quality was poor, and the overall quality of the coverage was poor.
Of course, looking at the track, it seems that there are acres of run-
off room, and the cameras are located way back from the track.
I was not impressed with the place at all. Typical coverage from USA .

IMO it is better to be able to see some of the track. Zoom in too
close and you can't see why they are doing what they do. Dumbest
thing is when you get to see what it's like to look backwards from
under the seat of forward from the brake caliper.
