OK,
Other happenings during the race have been beaten to death,
but I have neither seen nor heard of any reason why Elias did that.
He put a huge surprise pass on Rossi the first time, Rossi even
sat up and looked behind himself to see what was going on, and
it looked like if Tony put his head down he might even be able
to put a gap on the Doctor, he sure ran him down easy enough,
but then he pulls wide, waves his foot out the let Rossi back
in the lead - I was thinking WTF? are you looking for a ride
with Yamaha next year? but then he comes back a challenges and
eventually (barely) wins. So what was the deal with let him in
front move?

Seems to me like he wanted to show Rossi something on that pass.
Then he let him by again like a lot of racers do, so they can follow,
not lead, and think about their strategy for winning, be it passing
again on corner entry or exit or by drafting down the straight.
I've never seen Elias backing the bike in like that previously. His
braking was pretty amazing. Perhaps he wanted to conserve the rear tire
a bit longer before making his break. It certainly worked out well for
him.

And of course, it worked!

A lot of racers do that if they are really on the edge, sometimes you really
are in an alternate world, and you need to take grasp of reality, that's
what Elias was doing, he realised he was leading Rossi ,,, Yup ROSSI, he had
to take a reality check ... it was a good move, he let Rossi past? but then
he knew how to follow the master, also he Had-Tboned Rossi earlier in the
season, might have been a gift, he had us all fooled though, he rode,
probably the race of his life!
He was too excited to explain it properly, after race from what I saw ...
very deserving winner, though
If he rides like that, next race ... its going to be good.

It looked quite unsustainable riding. Perhaps he was just trying to
goad Rossi into some lunatic moves in the hope he'd loose it? Having
passed him too easily at first, he had to let him by again to get
another go.
Seemed to be working too. Another few laps like that and one or both
would have let go. Elias's rear wheel was all over the place in
braking - beyond normal physics - and he couldn't explain himself in
the interview. He also couldn't, or didn't want to, grasp the question
about him letting Rossi by.
If he was consistently that good, why haven't we seen much more of
Elias all season?
Tony.
