I like the look of comfort afforded by the Honda Goldwing, particularly for
the passenger, but I'm afraid of the size. With only a little motorcycle
experience, I think I'd probably want to keep the engine size to 700cc or
so. I'm pretty handy and on a budget, so which bikes are still reliable at
10 yrs old if maintained properly? Any pointers before I jump into this
field would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Buy a used Miata.
If You are afraid to ride a bike, then it doesn't matter what size bike
you CAN NOT HANDLE and are scared to death of.
You just said it yourself that you like "the look" of a large TOURING
bike, but are afraid.
Stay away!

PC800 is a great choice, however, it may be tough finding one. A friend of
mine in Baton Rouge just got one.
I'm experiencing the same dilemma as you, but the size is not the holdup for
me. Its the price. A new Wing runs 22 grand these days for the basic version.
That is out of my league. Right now I ride an '03 BMW R1150R and its about as
"perfect" allaround bike as I've ever seen, but the rear seat is not anywhere
near the comfort of the Goldwing, and my wife needs the comfy seat to ride
pillion, or she won't/can't go with me.
When I sat on a new Wing just a week ago or so, I was amazed at the stability
of the beast with both feet flatfooting and I'm only 5' 10" or thereabouts. If
a new rider gets some saddle time on a smaller bike, I think it would be a
pretty easy transition to a GoldWing, regardless of its size and weight.
Just my $.02
