My 99 Tbird odd problem...
I bought it about 9 months ago from a non-triumph dealer. Had the
carbs rebuilt and drove it a good 2,000 miles without problems.
It began running rough at idle. It would run fine above 4k rpm, but
was really awful getting there. My local dealer told me they 'did all
they could do' and couldn't find the problem. Told me they swapped out
the coils, adjusted timing gap, etc... said the only thing left was a
new CDI box.
I bought some coils on Ebay - cheap. When I opened it up myself I
found a). the coils hadn't been taken off the frame, probably ever.
b.) the connections to the coils were corroded and one was loose.
Swapped out the coils and cleaned the connectors and voila! Idle
problem solved.
But strangely, the bike runs great around town, but put it up on the
highway and it'll run for about 10-15 miles (at 4.5k rpm) before it
suddenly looses power and sputters. It doesn't quit, just seems to be
starving. Slow the bike down or stop for a few minutes and it's back
to normal for a while.
Put back the original coils - except one which is apparently bad -
same behavior.
My thinking is that perhaps this is a fuel flow problem. If the carbs
are not getting enough fuel supply, the bowls would at some point not
enough to feed the cylinders. Give them a little time to refil the
resevoirs and it behaves properly.
Any thoughts?

Many thanks folks. Turns out that the non-triumph fuel filter got
shook up when I took the tank off to change the coils and sent
something down the line. Pure Triumph in Ft. Lauderdale got it all
fixed up and adjusted. Spent the weekend in the Fla. Keys with it to
celebrate.
