I'm wondering if anyone might have any idea why cylinders 1 &3 fire
intermitently. Both coils seem to be ok but when the engine is running
cylinders 1&3 keep cutting in and out. I have heard that there is a balast
resistor in there somwhere but I'm not sure where to find it. I'm just
looking for some fresh input. Thanks !

I think you're looking in the wrong place. On your old XJ one coil runs
1 & 4, and the other runs 2 & 3, so a bad coil or any other ignition
problem would show up on those pairs (excluding plugs and wires of
course).
If the bike is surging, I suggest checking the intake manifolds first.
Cracks in the rubber will cause the engine to wander. Check those carbs
throughly (especially the slide diaphrams).
As far as a resistor goes... I have never seen one in my 750 Seca, but
I don't discount the idea that Yamaha stuck one in there somewhere just
so that we'd have to pay 50 bucks for a $3.00 chevrolet part ;)
lots 'o luck finding the problem,
Youngblood
