I am looking at purchasing a 1979 yamaha midnight special 2 for $600. It
runs pretty good ... some minor backfire when shifting and it makes a weird
"starter" noise when starting. The motor looks clean, and it has new tires.
Minor repairs are need which is to be expected. I guess it is always a
gamble buying a bike this old but I was wondering if anyone can offer
insight into this style of bike who has owned one. The owner seems very
trustworthy and was honest about the things he knew about but he probably
didn't know much about the bikes history with previous owners. I have owned
a 1980 Virago 750 and a 83 Virago 500. The latter was a great bike with
occasionaly problems but 750cc did cause a great deal of stress with issues.
Like I said its hard to predict on a bike that old so it is always a gamble.
Any input would be very helpful.
Thank you,
Luke

they're good bikes. basically a yamay version of a triumph
with decent brakes and electric starters. they are
plentiful, parts are cheap and you can find many 650 groups
for support.
the price is good, don't worry if it has a few miles.
the starters are a bit flaky but easy to fix, parts are
cheap. aside from that, they can kick start or even bump
start easily.
for that price, go for it or tell me where it is.
hit yahoo for 650 groups.
aside from a hinge in the frame, they ride nice...by that i
mean, don't lean them like speed racer unless you ARE speed
racer.
go for it, dude.

Add 3 or 4 ounces of carburetor cleaner like Berryman's B-12 to a full
tank of gas and go for a ride. The backfiring should go away.

I had a 1980 XS650SG for years. It was always dependable college
transportation. One mod I made is I replaced the rear sprocket with one with
two less teeth. It lowered the freeway RPMs and made it much nicer at speed.
I agree with the other postings; get the bike, have fun, BUT DON'T
"Ricky-Racer" it....it is not that type of bike!
