Hey since I'm new to motorcycles and all can some give
me advice on what brand/model  of helmet to buy for a
first timer?

First, read this report about a series of tests run by Motorcyclist
magazine:

Then consider ordering a Z1R helmet as something to start with.  I've been
riding for 40+ years, used all kinds of helmets, and when I read the
Motorcyclist article I happened to be in the market for a new lid.  I
ordered a Z1R, and have been very pleased with it.

One word of caution, however - the online sizing chart where I bought mine
said I'd need a medium, and that didn't surprise me, because it ALSO said
I'd wear a medium in an HJC, and I know that's correct - it's what I DO wear
in an HJC.  However, the medium was entirely too snug, and I needed to
return it for a large.  You could probably save some time and shipping costs
by ordering one size larger than their chart says you should.

Note also that ANY helmet will loosen a little after just a little wear,
especially in the cheek pads.  So even if you go to a bike store to try them
on, don't make the mistake of getting one that's loose to start with.  A
good fit is a little bit snug to start with, but after you've worn it for a
while, should adjust itself to fit you comfortably.

Note that helmets from various helmet manufacturers (and sometimes even
different styles among the same manufacturer) differ in shape.  So do human
heads.  Some are rounder, and some are more oval.  So the Z1R won't
necessarily fit everyone well, and neither will any other specific helmet
model.  I'm lucky, though, in that it's about a perfect fit for me.

Ride safe!

Half a year ago I would have said Arai, but am not so sure anymore.
They are overpriced in my opinion. I had my 500$ Arai drop from the
FZ6 handlebars and the side holder cracked and wouldn't hold the visor
anymore.
I'd say go for Shoei...or HJC if you want to save a few bucks.
As long as the helmet is DOT and SNELL approved you should be fine IMHO.
