I realize anyone who owns, or who has ever owned a 650 has asked this
question. ..But is there anything available for keeping track of the
fuel supply in the 650, other than the odometer?
I can't figure out why Yamaha can't manufacture a guage for this bike.
..It would seem to me, a simple cork riding on a metal "twist", and
connected to the gas cap, should work quite quite well. ...Jon

what's arong with just using the reserve function as intended?
or use the trip odometer?
guess i'm old school, but gas guages on a bike is just WRONG!
you could rig up an external sight glass pretty easy.
as i said about, check the user groups in yahoo and google.
someone probably make a retro fit guage.
yamaha hasn't done development on those past the point of reliability and
salability.

I use the reserve on my 1100 and have never had a problem getting to a
gas station.
Practice going to it while riding.
I usually only put in 3.5 gal's after switching to reserve - meaning
the reserve is a full gal.
@ ~ 45 MPG (1100) one would think that would be enough - unless
crossing desert or something.
your reserve could be much different though! check how much it takes
to fill vs its capacity after switching to it.
and ALWAYS REMEMBER TO SWITCH *OFF* RESERVE WHEN FILLING UP AFTER
USING THE RESERVE!!!

I think the origin of the post is related to something along this line...
or being on the freeway after a long straight haul and running out
without any warning sputter..

With my Virago 250, I could look in the tank and pretty much estimate
how much fuel was left.
With this guy, there's a baffle in there which blocks the light, so it's
pretty hard to see the depth of the remaining fuel. Further, as I'm
new to this bike, I'm not exactly sure of the burn rate yet, based on my
speeds. ...And of course wouldn't you know it: where I live, there's a
40 mile stretch of highway with no service stations. ...Sure hate to
get stuck in the middle somewhere. ...Especially, seen as how there's
no cell phone coverage along this stretch too. ....Jon
