So I'm riding along as perfectly as could be this weekend when suddenly, I try
to shift, but the shifter pedal isn't there. I look down and it's just hanging
down.
Now I can't shift and I'm in third. I pull over into a parking lot, turn the
bike off and dismount of check it out. I can't see anything obvious, but with
my gal with me and 50 miles from home, I decide to try for it. I push the bike
to the top of a hill in the lot, get on, turn everything on, and take a shot a
jump starting from 3rd gear. Luckily, the hill was steep and it worked.
So after a hair raising ride where I had to run a couple of red lights and let
all sorts of cars pass, plus a little judicious playing of the clutch, we made
it. And if it wasn't for the obvious, the bike ran fine. IOW, I don't think
it's a transmission problem, per se, but rather, some sort of pin or some such
thing which just let go.
Any thoughts? Oh yeah, it's a 1984 Venture Royale. Am I looking at big bucks?

I expect it is something pretty simple like the nut tightening the
shifter to the shaft.
On my 30 year old Enduro that got stolen, the a**hole who had it had
completely stripped the splines on both the shifter and the shaft.
(Police recovered the bike after a couple of months) I got a Mig
welder and built up a collar on the shaft, filed it down til it was
uniform and tapped on a new shifter......making my own splines on the
shaft. It is working and has for several months. I'm still a bit
careful about "stomping" on the shifter, but it beats tearing the thing
down to replace the shaft.......so far, at least.
cheers
