Heya...same issue as before with my '05 XVS 650. USed a bunch of oil on a
easy 1500 mile roadtrip. I noticed somethingelse, but wanted to make sure
before i shit the bed.
My mileage has dropped from almost 50 mpg to just under 40 mog. I do believe
the two are related and wanted to know if anyone had insight on what may be
going on before it goes in to the dealer this Tuesday.
The bike doesnt appear to have any outward signs of troubles, aside from a
slight lack of performance when I mash the throttle.
Thoughts anyone?

As an update, response from the dealer was that I misread the oil level in
the viewfinder. It was overfilled by 2 qts, which helped kill the mileage
cuz of it being over filled.
While I can see some logic in some of this, it still doesnt explain how the
viewfinder doesnt show any oil in the tank, even after a short run, read
level, on its stand on opposite lean, etc...
Ideas?

You read the oil level at least ten minutes after shutting off the engine to
allow the oil to drain back into the crankcase. You also read the oil level
on level ground with the bike completely vertical (perpendicular to the
ground). This gets interesting if you do not have (or use) a centerstand. It
then requires a second person to either hold the bike or squat down to read
the oil level or possibly a spool jack and a set of rear axle spools.

I've never liked the oil windows....I like the old school dip stick on
my '00 R6. Glad to hear it wasn't a more serious problem.

Agreed. Hence the source of my misread. I'm old school enough to trust a
dipstick than my own eyes.
