There are maybe problems with the TPS for YAMAHA motorbikes (YZF R1
RN12, FZ6) known to the public:
35 reports listed at the safety org. NHTSA/ODI (FZ6, R1), and there are
at least two reports about accidents and injured riders:

I have one of the first FZ6's sold in the U.S. I encountered this problem
for the first time in June of '04 (the first known case) and took it to the
dealer for service repeatedly (weekly at least). It was not until December
when a second case occurred in California that Yamaha could duplicate the
problem and find the cause. A new TPS of the same part number was installed
then.
The new TPS failed again in May (as I prepared to take the bike on a
week-long tour of California) and a new part number TPS was installed. After
setting up the TPS idle value correctly (18 with throttles closed, by the
way) the bike has delivered excellent power and great mileage (43 in town
and 55 on the road).
Moral: the original TPS design was an unfortunate initial flaw in an
otherwise excellent bike, and the new sensor design seems to have fixed it
completely. The first sensor failed at 2500 miles, but wasn't replaced until
7500 miles. The second TPS failed at 10,000 miles. The bike now has 18,000
miles and still runs like a dream.

Does anyone know offhand how to tell if you have an old TPS or the new
one? I own two FZ6s and so far the '05s are running fine. I didn't
know about this before I bought them. TIA

Possibly...If you call Yamaha's Dealer Hotline (800-635-0736) and select
customer relations from the voicemail menu, perhaps they could find out
using the bike's VIN. As I said, I had lots of experience with Yamaha
service departments before the cause of the problem was discovered.
