Bit of a guess as I'm more used to 125 and 250 Yamaha Virago's but
your description sounds very similar. In "on and reserve" the vacumn
holds a valve open using a diaphragm in the petcock. In "prime" you
bypass this valve so fuel can flow without the engine vacumn. I would
check the diaphragm hasn't got a small hole in it or the valve is
sticking.

Thanks a ton Bob!  I didn't realize there was that much going on in the
petcock assn....  The lever did seem a bit sticky when I first used it
after Winter storage; I wouldn't doubt at all this internal valve got
stuck.  I'm hoping I can clean/free it up by just removing the petcock
itself from the front of the valve assn...  I note there are still
rebuild kits available if not...

If I may ask another question...  The tank filter is part of the upper
petcock  assn. within the tank itself I assume... which will follow the
assn. if I need to detach it from the bottom of the tank... may I
further assume the filter itself cannot be fouled since gas runs freely
in 'prime'???

Well anyway, I hope this goes the easy route and is just ...yet
another... cheap twiddle... to keep my little bit of metric history
rolling.

Thanks Again,

Tim K

I'd make sure you drain the tank first or lay the bike down so the
fuel goes to the other side of the tank before stripping the petcock
otherwise you could have fuel all over the place. The tank filter
should be clear if its flowing OK in prime position. Let me know how
you get on.
