Is what I would do - I wasn't sure if Brian was necessarily up for
this degree of mechaniking. Also, I dunno about this bike, but on
some bikes (e.g. ZX10R) taking the plugs out is a 2 hour job...

Hi Champ, bit of an update from said son, the mechanic spent three
hours pulling the thing apart and was utterly gobsmacked that the
engine had seized.

Apparently (the mechanic) a very cool guy, almost as gutted as my son
was. Its definitely a goner so its going to be a 'project bike' (good
job I've a double garage). He has some decent money coming soon (he's a
music producer/musician) so a new bike will be in the offing.

As an aside, he's planning a charity bike ride through Eastern Europe
and the Baltic States, 2500 miles in 17 days for the MacMillan Trust,
so its just as well it packed in now and not later.

If its OK with you guys I'll post a link to the website for this as
soon as its up and running.

Thanks to all who replied.

147 miles a day? How... underwhelming.

My position was (and, to be honest, largely remains) one of complete ambiguity.

Hmmm, I've got it wrong *again*, probably around 5000 miles then, I'll
go check.

Crap.

Rough rule of thumb is if the top end seizes it's an ignition or cooling
fault, bottom end is lubrication.

I'd ignore him as he's a bit of a shit Yamaha dealer - the 650 Dragstar
is four-stroke (as pointed out by many others).
