I just recently got a 1974 TX500A. Got it running, the only problem is the
speedometer is very slow to react. When accelerating it is slow to respond
and when stopping it is extremely slow but does (minutes later get back to
0). I disconnected the cable and took out the wire and cleaned it, also
blew some WD-40 through the tubing. That did no good. Is there anything I
can do to the actual speedometer where it attaches to the cable? Any
suggestions will be very welcome.
Thanks

get nit rebuilt or replace from a junkyard. the mechanism
has dried grease on it and neds cleaning. has to be taken
apart.

The problem is in the speedometer. You may have to disassemble and clean the
mechanism.
Do not use WD-40 as a lubricant for your speedo cable, or the speedometer.
It dries and becomes gummy. Graphite powder or liithium grease is best for
the cable. If you can get the mechanism out of the case, immerse it in
kerosene to clean and remove the old hardened grease. Light weight oil like
3-in-one can be used on the bearings.

most yamays are sealed. correct about the wd-bad!
most bike shops sell good lube in a plastic squeeze bottle.
you can make a collar around the end to help drizzle it in.
