Hey...I'm a new/inexperienced rider...
This afternoon, I decided to take my bike out for a ride and seem to
now have a stalling problem when the choke is disengaged. It's been 2
weeks since I last rode, and at that time there was no problem with
stalling once it warmed up (around a mile from the house). But today,
even after about 3 or 4 miles, it would still stall when I stopped at a
light or stop sign. It wouldn't stay idling unless the choke was
engaged. This has never happened before...do I just need to ride
longer before it really gets warmed up?
I ride a 2004 V-Star 650 Custom basically straight out of the dealer.
I've only had it about a 6 weeks and today is the first time seeing
this problem.
Oh, and I'm in Houston, so I don't think it's a cold weather problem...
Thanks for your help...

Is it running any different than it was last time you rode, other than
it not idling? The reason I ask is that I'm trying to differentiate a
carburetor problem from an idle set screw adjustment. Have you called
the dealer from, which you purchased the bike, and told them of the
problem?
Ride safe

>From what I could tell, it sounds and feels the same when moving. The
only difference is, when I downshift coming to a stop, it will stall
out unless I quickly engage the choke. Otherwise it will stall. And
it will only start with the choke engaged.
I plan on taking it into the dealer for service early next week, so I
will definitely be telling them about this...

I had that happen on my XV-250 where it stalled at a stop sign and I had to
run it with the choke on to get it to run. The problem was I had added what
gas I had in a gas can so I could fill the cans and when I came back I reset
the trip odometer forgetting the tank was not full. This went on for two
days before I remembered what I had done.

It sounds to me like a possible problem with the idle jet. You probably
have some garbage (dirt) in the jet which is starving the engine for
fuel. If you know where the idle set screw is on the carburetor is, you
might try and adjust the idle up to avoid the stalling until you get it
into the dealer.
Ride safe.
