My grandson has a TTR 125 L bike and we are having trouble starting
it. If it sets and is not used for a long time it starts hard. Last
night my 16 year old grandson wore out his leg and we still didn't get
it going. He tells me 2 of his friends have yamaha's and they have the
same problem . One has electric start and he runs the battery dead
trying to start his if it hasn't been run in a while.
We haven't started it all winter. After cranking it for a long time I
took out the sparkplug and it was wet. I dried it off and kicked the
crank a few times to clear the engine. It then fired and ran for a short
while so I believe it is getting flooded.  Spark is good .  We quit
because his leg was wore out.
If it is used once a week or so it starts right up with only a few
kicks. It is only 2 years old and been well taken care of. It has done
this since we bought it new.
Sounds like it might be a common problem. Any help would be
appreciated.

Don

i dont know how great it was for the bike but when i got my 82 maxim 550
it had been sitting since last summer. the carbs leaked cause of stuff
in the needle and seat. i cleaned out the bowls (all 4) and ran some
2cyl gas through it. that seems to help clear it up a bit. i have also
heard of using a cap full of MMO in a full tank of gas to help with that.

I have a xt 225 and sounds exactly the same however if I our some gas in the
sparkplug hole it starts right up.

Drain all the old gas out.  Gas these days lasts only about a month without
stabilizer in it.  There is a screw on the bottom of the carb.  Disconnect
the fuel line from the carb and open the petcock into a can.  With fresh
gas, it should start right up.  If not, you may have some varnish build up
on your needle valve inside the carb.  It's a good idea to put Stabil or
another product like it in the gas for the winter.  Also, turn off the
petcock and then run the carb empty so as to not leave any gas in there to
go bad.  Good luck.  Shawn

I have a TTR 125 L and a YZ 125.  I have always used Sta-Bil in the
gas.  Because of work and travel they both sat for a year.  I was
envisioning taking the carbs apart and cleaning them but I was hopeful
the Sta-Bil had done it's job.  When I was finally able to have some
time I tried to start up the YZ.  I kicked it until I was tired.  Now I
am really starting to think I am going to have a lot of work ahead of me
cleaning up the carbs.  Then I remembered to turn on the gas.  A few
kicks latter it started right up.  I remembered to turn on the gas on
the TTR and it only took a few kicks and it was running.  Not bad for
sitting for a year.  That weekend we ran out the tank in both bikes and
as second tank of fresh gas.  I love Sta-Bil now.
