I just bought a 83 Venture today. I've had an 02 V-Star 1100 Classic for
three years and love it, but it's not the best long-ride machine, especially
for my wife...
Anyway, anything to watch out for on these older models? It has 69K miles
and seems to be in very good condition and well maintained.
Thanks,

slouch , there a lot of power in that machine if its in tune.

I don't know where VB gets his information about expensive rod jobs but he's
all wet about that. You do have to watch out for 2nd gear failure though.
Best thing is for you to go to the Venture groups, there are 2 of them and
there are many people there that can help with all kinds of problems you may
run into. I have an 85 Venture 1200 and love it.

Others have answered well but I'm gonna throw in my nickel too.
Go to www.delphiforums.com , membership is free for basic access and there
is a wealth of information available. While I don't know if there is a
dedicated Venture group I do know that RoadStar Riders has a huge amount of
info available and some of the sharpest minds there are when it comes to
problems and fixes.
I thought I knew a bit about bikes in general till I started studying there
when I bought my RoadStar. Good people!
