I have a question on engine oil type.  I bought a '05 V-Star 1100 last year
and I'm about to change the oil.  Yamaha says to use 10w-30w, I just want to
know if I can go to a synthetic 10-30w.  I assume I can, but I want to be
sure. Pete

You can use full synthetic of any oil as long as it does not contain anti
friction additives. You can tell this by looking on th rear of the container
for the circle that has "API service" in 12:00 position. If it is blank at
6:00 position, it is good to use. If it says "Energy Conserving", that means
it has the anti-frictions modifiers that will ruin your clutch. I use
Castrol Syntec 20-50 in my Road Star for 3 years and love it. Oil sold for V
twin use is simply over priced for oil that is same as what you need. You
should be able to use 10 - 40 but check manual first
