Just bought a new VStar 1100 Classic, happy with the bike but seem to have a
hard time getting to 1st gear at lights, stop signs, etc.I toe it down as
hard as possible but sometimes end up in a higher gear and stall. What am I
doing wrong please?
Is it me or the bike?

Hard to tell for sure without being there to see what you're doing,
but are you remembering to shift down BEFORE you come to a complete
stop? If for some reason you forget or are too busy to shift as you're
coming to a stop, you can usually let the clutch out partway for a
second, listen or feel for a 'thunk', pull in the clutch again, then
shift down another gear, and so on, until you get to first. Above all,
don't force the shift lever! When the conditions are right, it will
shift with extremely light pressure.

Count whilst downshifting. This helps me as well as feeling the half step
going from 2nd to neutral, for which is where i sit waiting for green to
turn

And wait.

And wait some more.

(Then it goes green when I am scoping out whats around me.)

it needs to run in a bit. shift down all the way before you
stop. but from SLOW speeds.

You may want to have the dealer adjust the travel on the toeshift
lever. I had exactly the same problem when I bought my 2005 1100
Silverado. Problem never re-appeared after the toeshift was adjusted.
Ride safe.
