Thread from June 05...
Was this ever answered besides I shoulda, coulda or woulda?
Ok so I just got my V Star 650 and am playing catch up on the threads. Is
there any upgrade available to the gearing to either add a 6th gear or
lower
gear ratio to keep the RPM's at higher speeds down?
Also, my VStar has an annoying high-pitched whirring sound when cruising. I
think it may be the shaft drive causing the unwanted sounds that i hear
over
the exhaust.
Clues?
Thanks.

If you're gonna ride a 2-cylinder bike, you really need more than 650 cc. to
provide the power that's required for normal riding. That's why there are
so many 1100 cc V-twins around. Even those aren't particularly large
(considering the 1300, 1500, and 1800 cc + V-twins that are available), but
if you're not interested in a reasonable amount of thrust, they're adequate.
A 650 isn't. You're not gonna be satisfied with it for long. Trade up
before you try to pass a couple of RV's on an uphill mountain road.

you mean v twin. those are pretty gutless in smaller sizes.
my 650 triumph, 69 tr6 puts out 44 hp and i pass whatever i
want uphill. including most cruisers.

To someone who rides on 145 hp, 44 hp still seems pretty gutless.
The point is, more powerful bikes CAN be ridden sensibly, yet more thrust is
available when you need it. Bigger bikes aren't something to be afraid of.
And don't get started on mileage. My FJR delivers 48 mpg with 2-up on
mountain roads.

44 hp doesn't seem gutless on that triumph. it's a small,
relatively light bike. but i've ridden 145hp bikes and
they're ok for a good rider. i'm not a sprt bike fan,
they're uncomfortable to me, especially on long rides.
cruisers flat out bore me. i ride, not cruise.
